The history behind National Mustard Day

Mustard is obtained from the mustard plant that falls under the genera Brassica and Sinapis, belonging to the family Brassicaceae. Mustard is known to have originated in Rome, where rich Romans used it in their meals. Mustard Day was founded in the year 1988 by Jill Sengstock. Later on, the National Mustard Museum sponsored National Mustard Day in the year 1991.

America is known to be a country that has the highest consumption of mustard. Yellow mustard is so popular in the United States that it is commonly called American Mustard. 

Mustard is very healthy. It is a rich source of nutrients and antioxidants. It is rich in selenium, omega-3, omega-6, potassium, magnesium, and calcium. It has anti-inflammatory properties, can lower blood pressure, and speed up metabolism.

Prior to its status as a condiment, mustard was initially used as a medicinal plant. It was utilized by French monks to treat wounds. The Greeks used it to treat pain and indigestion. Mustard baths are a form of therapeutic treatment that can be used to treat fevers and seizures. 

The National Mustard Museum was founded in 1986 by Barry Levenson, a mustard collector.
