Mental health is just as important as physical health. World Mental Health Day, on October 10, raises awareness of mental health issues, reduces stigma and encourages people to seek help when they need it. It's a day to check in with yourself and others, learn about mental health and support policies and programs that make care accessible.
History of World Mental Health Day
The World Federation for Mental Health established World Mental Health Day in 1992. Richard Hunter, the federation's deputy secretary general, helped launch the day. The World Health Organization supports it.
In 1994, the day began having annual themes, such as mental health in the workplace, young people's mental health and suicide prevention.
In recent years, awareness of mental health has grown, and more people are talking openly about their experiences. In the United States, the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline launched in 2022, making it easier to reach help by calling or texting 988.
Attitudes toward mental health have changed significantly over time. For much of history, people with mental illness were often isolated or mistreated. Reformers such as Dorothea Dix in the 1800s campaigned for better care, and in recent decades, research and advocacy have improved understanding and treatment.
Why World Mental Health Day Matters
Mental health conditions are common, and many people experience challenges at some point in their lives.
Reducing stigma encourages people to seek help early.
The day also promotes practices that support well-being, such as connection, rest, exercise and professional support when needed.
Talking about mental health can also make it easier for others to seek help. When people share their experiences, it can reduce shame and isolation. Schools, workplaces and communities increasingly offer mental health resources, and knowing where to find them is an important step for everyone.
How to Celebrate World Mental Health Day
- Check in: ask a friend or family member how they're doing.
- Learn: read about mental health from trusted sources.
- Practice self-care: take a walk, rest or talk to someone.
- Share resources: post information about where to find help.
- Seek support: talk to a doctor, counselor or call or text 988 in the U.S.
Celebrating at Work, School and Home
At work, share mental health resources, such as employee assistance programs, and encourage breaks and time off. Leaders can model openness. In classrooms, students can learn about emotions, coping strategies and how to ask for help, and schools can share counseling resources. At home, families can talk openly about feelings, practice calming activities together and make sure everyone knows where to turn for help. If you or someone you know is in crisis in the U.S., call or text 988.
