March 1–5, 2027 Monday–Friday of the first full week of March

Last updated

National School Breakfast Week runs March 1–5, 2027, when cafeterias dress up the morning meal with themed menus, games and contests.

First Full Week of March

Every year in early March, from Monday to Friday of the month’s first full week. In 2026, it ran March 2 to 6, and 2027 brings March 1 to 5.

Dates are posted years ahead. The 2028 week runs March 6 to 10, and 2030’s runs March 4 to 8.

America’s school nutrition association launched it in 1989, back when the group was called the American School Food Service Association. It still sets each year’s theme.

No law fixes the dates. School districts and state agencies pick up SNA’s free materials and plan their own events.

From a Pilot to a Daily Meal

Federal breakfast began small. In 1966, Congress started a two-year pilot that gave grants to schools serving breakfast to needy children.

That first year, about 80,000 children took part, at a federal cost of $573,000. In 1973, per-meal payments replaced the original grants.

Priorities sharpened in 1971. Schools serving children of working mothers and low-income families moved to the front of the line.

Permanent status came in 1975. Congress said breakfast should be “made available in all schools where it is needed.”

Lunch had a head start. President Truman signed the National School Lunch Act in 1946, the same year the association’s roots took shape.

Its members already had a lunch week too. Congress created National School Lunch Week by joint resolution in 1962, and breakfast got its own spotlight in 1989.

In 2004, the group took its current name, the School Nutrition Association.

Why Breakfast Gets a Week

The 1975 law set a broad goal: breakfast wherever it’s “needed to provide adequate nutrition for children in attendance.”

Today the program is huge. It serves more than 12 million breakfasts across the country every school day, compared with 80,000 children in its pilot year.

Two goals drive the week, in SNA’s telling. It celebrates what a nutritious breakfast does to prepare students to learn, and it honors school nutrition professionals.

States see the scale too. Iowa schools alone served over 19.3 million breakfasts in the 2024–25 school year.

Themes keep it fun. The 2026 theme, “The Quest for School Breakfast,” used a medieval adventure setting, and 2023’s was “Dig In to School Breakfast.”

Meg Collins of Iowa’s education department calls the week “a wonderful opportunity for classrooms and cafeterias to incorporate fun activities.”

She also says school breakfast is about more than food. It’s “setting kids up for success,” in her words.

How Schools and Families Join In

Most of the action happens in cafeterias. SNA’s 2026 toolkit included checklists, sample menus, playlists, decorating ideas and a press release template.

  • Eat breakfast at school with your child one morning, if your district allows visitors.
  • Thank the cafeteria staff who start cooking before the first bell.
  • Use SNA’s free activity sheets for a classroom game tied to the theme.
  • Ask your school whether it offers breakfast in the classroom or grab-and-go carts.
  • Try a new fruit or whole-grain item from the breakfast line.
  • Share photos of themed menus with #NSBW and your district’s handle.
