World Teachers’ Day

Tuesday, October 5, 2027 Every year on October 5

Teachers shape the future by educating, inspiring and supporting students. World Teachers' Day, on October 5, honors teachers around the world and highlights their importance in society. It's a day to thank teachers who have made a difference, advocate for their working conditions and celebrate the profession. Many people can name a teacher who changed their life.

History of World Teachers' Day

On October 5, 1966, UNESCO and the International Labor Organization (ILO) adopted the Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, an international agreement setting standards for teachers' rights, responsibilities, training and working conditions.

In 1994, UNESCO established World Teachers' Day on October 5 to commemorate the anniversary of the 1966 Recommendation. Each year has a theme, focusing on issues such as teacher shortages, professional development and the role of teachers in shaping education.

In the United States, Teacher Appreciation Week is held in May, but World Teachers' Day offers another chance to recognize educators.

Teaching has been a respected profession in many cultures for thousands of years, from ancient philosophers who taught in public squares to one-room schoolhouses in rural America. Pioneering educators such as Horace Mann, who championed public schools in the 1800s, and Mary McLeod Bethune, who founded a school for Black students in 1904, helped expand education to more children.

Why World Teachers' Day Matters

Teachers help students develop knowledge, skills and confidence that last a lifetime.

Many countries face teacher shortages, and recognizing teachers' work can help attract and retain them.

The day also highlights the need for fair pay, training and support so teachers can do their best work.

Teachers often go far beyond lesson plans. They support students' emotional well-being, notice when a child is struggling, buy classroom supplies with their own money and stay late to help. A simple note of thanks can mean a great deal to a teacher, especially when it describes a specific moment that made a difference.

How to Celebrate World Teachers' Day

  • Thank a teacher: send a note or email to a current or former teacher.
  • Share a story: post about a teacher who made a difference.
  • Support classrooms: donate supplies to a local school.
  • Advocate: support policies that help teachers.
  • Volunteer: help at a school or tutoring program.

Celebrating at Work, School and Home

At work, invite employees to share stories about influential teachers or support a school supply drive. In classrooms, students can write thank-you letters, create a gratitude wall or make cards for teachers and school staff. At home, families can help children write notes to their teachers, or reach out to a former teacher. A heartfelt message often means more than a gift.
